(Lanka-e-News -12.Feb.2024, 11.30 PM) Young voters in Sri Lanka are increasingly seeking a change in the political landscape, disillusioned by decades of unfulfilled promises and patchwork policies by major political parties. The failure to deliver substantial economic, social, and cultural development has eroded trust in traditional political institutions.
Historically, political parties have wielded overwhelming parliamentary majorities to push through constitutional amendments and enact draconian laws, undermining democracy and public confidence. Instances in 1970, 1977, 2005, and 2019 have left a stain on Sri Lanka's democratic fabric, further eroding public trust.
Amidst this backdrop, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) faces internal challenges, with key figures such as Sarath Fonseka and Patali Champika expressing discontent with the leadership. The recent inclusion of right-wing politician Channa Jayasumana, known for his divisive anti-Muslim rhetoric during the 2019 presidential elections, has stirred controversy within the party ranks.
During the 2019 elections, Jayasumana propagated false accusations against a Muslim doctor, inciting ethnic tensions and contributing to the victory of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The decision to welcome figures like Jayasumana into the SJB fold has alienated a significant portion of Muslim voters, prompting them to seek alternative political platforms.
The inclusion of anti-Muslim elements within the SJB raises concerns about the party's commitment to inclusivity and pluralism. Many young voters, disheartened by the party's embrace of divisive figures, are exploring alternative political avenues such as the National People's Power (NPP).
If the SJB continues to extend its membership to individuals with a history of inflammatory rhetoric and divisive politics, it risks further alienating minority communities and losing the support of disillusioned youth voters. The challenge for the party lies in reconciling its internal dynamics while staying true to its vision of a progressive and inclusive Sri Lanka.
