(Lanka-e-News-09.Oct.2012, 11.45PM) The Judges after considering the difficulties experienced by the public, decided at their meeting today to resume work tomorrow (10), according to reports. The Magistrates and judges of the courts who met in Colombo this evening , at the discussions took the view that to oppose the Govt.’s actions of undermining the independence of the judiciary , having the courts opened and not their closure is the answer .
The judges have been of the view at the discussions that at least if justice is to be meted out pertaining to the attack launched on the judge Thilakaratne , the courts have to remain open. The judges had also decided to discuss with the JSC regarding the risks and dangers faced by them from the point of view of security measures to be adopted.
Following the attack on JSC secretary , the courts were not functioning on the 8th and 9 th as the judges staged a strike as a mark of protest . Meanwhile even today (9) , the Association of Lawyers of the Magistrate courts staged protests in front of the courts.
The Galle district court Lawyers also staged a protest in front of the Galle courts today (9).

The Lawyers’ association had earlier taken a decision that they would give full support to whatever decision the judges of the courts take.
A conference is to be held tomorrow (10) at the new Town Hall on ‘keep hands off courts’ . This had been organized by Lawyers for Democracy with the participation of Ven. Maduluwawa Sobitha Thero and others who are scheduled to speak. The Ven. Sobitha thero is also to stage a satyagraha along with other Prelates in support of the cause of the independence of the judiciary on the 11th , reports say.
It is the opinion of independent analysts that , since the judges like the University academics cannot strike and go on protest processions against the murderous threats and challenges faced by them , it is the duty of the civilians and civil Organizations to be at the vanguard of espousing the cause of the independence of the judiciary and Democracy. |
