| Chandrika takes over election battle |

( Feb 17, 1.15 pm) A series of seminars are being organized in support of the United People's Freedom Alliance candidates contesting the local government election under the patronage of SLFP leader Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Amidst calls from certain Ministers and organizers that Kumartunga who retired from the Presidency should resign from the SLFP leadership, she continues be in charge of administrative activities of he party and appointment of district and electoral organizers of the party. Already Ranjith Amarasiri Fernando, a son of former Nuwara Eliya parliamentarian T. William Fernando has been appointed as the party organizer of the Nuara Eliya electorate and a Court Commissioner Premalal Navanandana Silva as organizer of the Balapitiya electorate. Their appointment letters were recently handed over by Kuamratunga.
The SLFP propaganda committee for the local government election was scheduled for yesterday(16) , but Kumaratunga herself had postponed it as she had to attend a commemorative ceremony of her late husband Vijaya Kumaratunga. The other members of the committee are Ministers Mangala Samaraweera, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Dr. Cecil Bandara Senaratne.
Arrangements have been made to conduct a seminar for all SLFP local government candidates of the North Western Province in Kurunegala while a similar seminar for the candidates of the Central Province will he held in Kandy. |
