(Lanka-e-News, 2007 Dec.02, 8.30 PM) Over thousand Tamils have been arrested by the police over the last three days in capitol Colombo and many parts of the south in the country on clear
instructions received from the defense ministry.
Tamils were subjected to arrest and detention for not carrying national identity cards and failing to register them with the police until recently. But today being a member of Tamil community in this country has become a cause for going behind bars at police stations and thrown into detention centers. Police arrest Tamils and
then look for reasons as per instructions received from the top says Western Peoples Front leader Mano Ganesan MP in a statement. Ganesan said further,
"Over thousand Tamils have been arrested by the police over the last three days in capitol Colombo and many parts of the south in the country on clear instructions received from the defense ministry. There is no discrimination
shown between men, women, children and students and any consideration shown for the sick. Tamils were bundled in bus loads and taken for interrogation.
Many were taken to Boosa detention centre for detention. Some are taken to the Kalutara and other prisons. Another part of the arrested are kept at the police station cells. This has sent clear fear psyche into the Tamil community. Tamils have been prevented from carrying on their usual livelihood functions."
"The security forces and police have a legitimate necessity to prevent terrorist activities in the city. We understand this fact and severely condemn all violent acts in all parts of the country. But the government
cannot dismiss issue of arrests as mere law and order subject. Tamils will not accept this position. The government fails to understand the political nature behind all terrorist acts. We believe only a political approach coupled with police action can bring results. Government leaders should not forget that they have today virtually closed down all available political
avenues and going only with the war thrust. The Civil Monitoring Commission has sent situation reports on these indiscriminate arrests of Tamil to all diplomatic missions in Colombo."
"We have sought the attention of the Indian government in respect of the harassment meted to the people of recent Indian origin. We have been informed that Indian High Commissioner who has left Colombo for New Delhi will apprise the Indian government on the disruptive
situation." |
