(Lanka-e-news, 29th Feb 2008, 8.00am) Mr. Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister of Information and Media stated that appointing members to the constitutional council will be delayed until comments received from the Parliament Select Committee appointed to avoid practical weaknesses of the 17th amendment and submit suitable recommendations, in reply to the questions raised by media at a press conference today (28th).
The minister stated as above at a press conference held today to inform cabinet decisions regarding the delay in appointing nominees to the constitutional council and not submitting the President's nominee as yet.
Even though it was agreed to the 17th amendment for better administration several years ago, the targeted constitutional council could not be established so far. Because of this delay, a protest was held at Lipton Circle by United National Party on last Monday (25th).
During the discussions President Mahinda Rajapakshe and Opposition Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe had day before yesterday (26th), Opposition Leader insisted that steps will have to be taken by the President to establish the constitutional council without any further delay. In the meantime, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is accusing the President that he is delaying this purposely until his buddies are appointed to the top posts of the Government.
However, Cabinet Spokesman, Mr. Anura Priyadarshana Yapa indicated today that it is noticed that to appoint a school Principal even, it will take about two years because of the weakpoints of the 17th amendment. Therefore, to receive recommendations to avoid such weakpoints, a Parliament Select Committee was appointed and every steps will be taken by the Government, on recommendations received from this committee.
No proper answer was received from the Minister to a question raised by one journalist, whether the nominated members will not be appointed until the said recommendations are received, but he mentioned that the Government is looking forward to receiving recommendations form the Parliament Select Committee and decisions on Constitutional Council will be taken thereafter.
Accordingly, it is very doubtful that the constitutional concil will be established as expected by the 17th amendment. |
