Lawyers demonstrate protesting attacking colleague; 5000 to rise against threats
(Lanka-e-News, 30-Sep-2008, 11.00PM) Lawyers held a massive demonstration today before Supreme Court to protest the intended threat to lawyers symbolized by the bomb attack targeting well known human rights lawyer and Executive Director of Transparency International J.C. Weliamuna.

President’s Adviser and counsel Vasudewa Nanayakkara introduced the bomb attack as a heinous act that threatens the independency of the judiciary.

Counsel Upul jayasuriya said that this should not be considered an isolate incident since it is an attack to the unity of the entire legal profession. Stating that the lawyers could not be threatened by the incidents like this, he vowed that at least 5000 lawyers would rise against them.

Senior counsels, foreign journalists and civil society activists joined today’s protest.

We have to face the truth. How can Mr. Weliamuna be responsible for SRi Lanka being one of the highly corrupted countries? All politicians and some of our citizens who are involved in the bureacracy helped Sri Lanka to get this bad reputation. Still there are fools who think that this innocent representative is the one who labelled Sri Lanka as a corrupted country.
