All political parties must thank India through a joint statement
(Lanka-e-News, October 30, 2008, 5.30 PM) Minister of Information and Media Lakshman Yapa Abewardhana says in a press conference held in the Ministry yesterday (29) the government is working for a quick political solution for the problem of north and ready to stop war if LTTE lays down arms and comes to the negotiation table.
The Minister made this statement in response to a query United National Party (UNP) MP Kabeer Hashim had posed through media asking whether the government was going to a political solution stopping war or continuing it.

He said that according to government position, all political parties needed to thank India through a joint statement for its diplomatic mediation to calm the tense situation in Tamil Nadu. He said the unresolved problems related to Tamil Nadu could be resolved amicably after the visit of MP Basil Rajapakse.
UNP General Secretary Thissa Aththanayaka asked why the government accepted an offer of 800 metric tons of food from India while claiming sufficient stocks had been sent there. The Minister said in response that Sri Lanka had not rejected the food donations received from various countries. In the same way, the Indian food stock was accepted as an appreciation of Indian government’s cordiality and they would be distributed through government channels legally.

The Minister said that the government position was that there was no war in north but a humanitarian operation to free them from LTTE hold and to grant them democracy and development.

He said that the government was ready to stop military operations if the LTTE is ready to come to the negotiation table. He pointed out that the UNP was publicizing that the government was going to stop war to undermine the outcome of the tour of Mr. Basil Rajapakse. They who thought that India would intervene to stop war got upset with the India’s statement that she would not interfere internal affairs of Sri Lanka.

Minister Yapa said that no step against the joint statement of the two countries would be taken. ‘We have assured India that we will go for a political solution soon. A solution can be granted to north only through Provincial Councils empowered by 13th amendment of the constitution.

“Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidi also agreed to withdraw the threat of resigning after Mr. Basil Rajapakse’s talks with India. We have to thank to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for agreeing to terminate the influence,” said the Minister.
