(Lanka-e-News, October 31, 2008, 9.00 AM) Colombo district judge Sisira Rathnayaka rejected the argument of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe's counsels that the court had no legal powers to hear a case and decided to proceed with the case of contempt of court against the Opposition Leader who is accused of submitting wrong affidavits to the court.
The district judge ordered to show cause by both parties on December 17, the date fixed for hearing.
Former UNP MP Anura Bastian had submitted a petition to the district court seeking nullifying the pact between the United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickramasinghe and Sri Lanka Freedom Party People's Wing (SLFP-PW) leader Mangala Samaraweera. He argued that the UNP leader had no powers to come to such agreement without prior approval of the party and asked the courts to nullify the pact.
The counsels of Mr. Bastian have pointed out that the affidavit that was submitted by the Leader of Opposition was inaccurate and it amounted to contempt of court.
