(Lanka-e-News, November 29, 2008 11.00 AM) Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva issued an interim injunction yesterday (28) suspending duties of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Chairman who signed the petroleum hedging agreement and ordered to appoint a new Chairman.
The Chief Justice directed the President to take over the CPC and appoint a Chairman or to appoint the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance to the post until a new Chairman is appointed. |

The Chief Justice issued these orders as two rights petitions, one filed by the group Ven Thiniyawala Palitha Thero, Counsel Ravi Jayawardhana and MP Ravi Karunanayaka and another filed by K.H. Wegapitiya, the Chairman of LAUGFS were taken for consideration today.
Minister of Petroleum and Petroleum Resources A.H.M. Fowsie, CPC Chairman Asantha de Mel, Treasury Secretary Sumith Amarasinghe, the Finance Minister and the Attorney General were the respondents of the two fundamental rights petitions. |

| Corrupt Ministers should be exposed |

The Supreme Court directed the Treasury to review the massive amounts of taxes levied from fuel and to produce a new formula to reduce prices at the next hearing.
Stating that corrupt Ministers should be exposed, the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva asked how a person that had not passed even Advanced Level signed an agreement like this on behalf of the country. He expressed displeasure over the Minister of Petroleum and Petroleum Resources for safeguarding such drastic acts.
The Chief Justice advised that the government or the cabinet should not go for such agreements.
