| Nominations close; 2247 contest for 106 posts of Provincial Councilors in two provinces |

(Lanka-e-News, December 31, 2008, 6.25 PM) The acceptance of nominations for the Central Provincial Council election closed at noon today at Kandy, Mathale, Nuwaraeliya District Secretariats whilst the nomination acceptance for the Northwestern Provincial Council concluded at Kurunegala and Puttalam District Secretariats.
1276 candidates contest from registered political parties while the independent groups have filed nominations for 971 candidates. The elections for the two Provincial Councils are to be held on February 14 from 7 AM to 4 PM.

Ten political parties and two independent groups contest for the Kandy district. Nominations filed by two more political parties and independent groups were rejected.
Twelve political parties and eight independent groups contest for the Mathale district.
Fourteen political parties and ten independent groups contest for the Nuwaraeliya district whilst nominations of two independent groups were rejected.

Eight registered political parties and five independent groups contest for the Kurunegala district of the Northwestern Province. Nominations of two political parties and two independent groups were rejected.
In Puttalam district, twelve political parties and 12 independent groups have filed nominations while two more nominations, one of a political party and another of an independent group have been rejected.
The number of registered voters for the Kandy district is 955, 108. The number of councilors elected is 30.
There are 10 seats in the Central Provincial Council for Mathale district which has an electoral registry of 338, 946 persons.
The number of registered voters in Nuwaraeliya district is 452,395 and 16 councilors are elected.
In the Northwestern Province, 1,171,881 voters are registered in Kurunegala district and 30 seats are allocated in the Provincial Council for the district.
Sixteen councilors are elected from Puttalam district where 489,852 voters are registered. |
