(Lanka-e-News 30Jan.2009 6.45PM) The Union Government would continue to work towards a political settlement of the issues in Sri Lanka, including meaningful devolution of powers and early restoration of peace, External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee said here on Friday.
"The government of India will continue to work for a political settlementof the issues in Sri Lanka, including meaningful devolution and early restorationof peace," Mukherjee, who visited Colombo a few days ago, said in a letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
"Our concerns for the safety and security of innocent civilians in the conflictwill continue to lead us to do whatever we can to ameliorate and resolve the situation", he said in the letter, copies of which were released to the media.
"I had written to you earlier about my talks with Sri Lankan president Rajapaksein Colombo on January 27. Yesterday evening, Rajapakse issued an appeal, giving 48 hours for free movement of civilians in the conflict zone to ensure their safety and security."
"I understand necessary instructions to this effect have been given by the government of Sri Lanka to allow movement of civilians trapped in the conflict zone to safer areas".
Mukherjee said "you would recall this was an issue which had raised in Sri Lanka and we have accordingly added the Government of India's voice that all civilians be able to move to safety".
He said he had enclosed copies of statements by Rajapakse and the Foreign Secretary.
