(Lanka-e-News, March 31, 2009, 9.15 AM) United National Party (UNP) National Organizer S. B. Disanayaka charges that the proposal of the eight-member committee of the UNP to appoint a senior leader and to share power within the party was paralyzed as a result of an unethical conspiracy of the party leader. S.B. Disanayaka was one of the members of the committee.
The statements made by the national organizer S. B. Disanayaka and deputy secretary Lakshman Senevirathna to media hints that the UNP internal struggle has not ended despite reports that the conflict was resolved and Ranil Wickramasinghe was unanimously accepted as the leader of party.
Lakshman Senevirathna also said to media yesterday (30) that rejection of the proposal of the eight-member committee appointed in accordance with a suggestion of Ranil Wickramasinghe was a destructive act.
Disanayaka expressed the same idea in an interview with Lakbima newspaper yesterday (30). Following are the incidents that took place in the executive committee meeting as exposed by S. B. Disanayaka. |

"In accordance with the consent of Ranil Wickramasinghe for a change, an eight-member committee was appointed including me to proceed with the programme. There were diversity of ideas among the committee members but the proposal submitted by the general secretary to the party working committee was unanimously agreed. The leader was made aware of the proposal and he had also agreed to it. The proposal was to appoint a senior leader for the party and to share power. Later a proposal with 20 signatures of the MPs against this was set forth in the working committee. It is a very serious conspiracy. One member of the committee had also signed to that proposal. The counter proposal was handled by two associates of another committee member. It is learnt that the leader was also behind it. We decided to go for an agreement within the party without splitting it. That is why we agreed with the leader to the present solution. |

"I stress again that it was a conspiracy supported by the leader to defeat our programme. I emphasize that it is most unethical and abhorring. I believe that the leader was at least aware of it to certain extent. I expressed these views at the working committee meeting as well.
"The only good of this incident is the uncovering of the individuals that play double games. It is so important to the party future," said S. B. Disanayaka. |
