(Lanka-e-News, March 31, 2009, 5.15 PM) Admitting the responsibility of arresting media persons, Defense Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse says that they have been jailed not because they are journalists but because they are terrorists.
He said that those arrested were not de facto media persons but those posed as journalists for the needs of the LTTE. He pointed out that in one case a distributor of Uthayan newspaper was also considered as a journalist although he was a terrorist.
He says that the journalist identity is a mask for their terrorist face.

The Defense Secretary further stated that arresting terrorists was a part of the duty.
Commenting on the attack on Sirasa he says, "The country needs to defeat terrorism today. Why are the security forces sacrificing lives? If war heroes are criticized and wrong ideas are spread in this context, people will protest it. In such instances, people take laws to their hands and act impatiently. I think Sirasa also faced a similar situation. People may have expressed their wrath. I don't approve it. But such things can happen."
The Defense Secretary expressed these views in an interview with Lakbima newspaper. |
