(Lanka-e-News, August 31, 2009, 7.15 PM) The decision taken by the former President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1983 to waive the housing loans taken under the National Housing development Authority (NHDA) , is now being rescinded by this Govt. after 16 years , said Sajith Premadasa , Hambantota UNP M.P. The borrowers are plunged into serious difficulties by the Govt. as a result of the NHDA demanding payment from the borrowers together with penalty and interest. Mr. Premadasa questioned as to why the Govt. has suddenly decided to demand this in such an unholy haste.
Mr. Premadasa made these remarks when speaking to the media at the UNP media unit today (31). |

The NHDA has sent letters to these borrowers demanding the arrears including penalty dues and interest, while in some cases already action has been filed by the Govt. against these individuals, he lamented. When it was probed as to why the Govt. has taken such a decision with such haste , it has been discovered that it is because the NHDA is so bankrupt and it has no money even to pay the salaries of the staff. The Govt. is therefore creating an era of sacrificing the people to bail itself out from its financial bankruptcy , he asserted. |

Isn’t the NHDA bound to adhere to the promises made by the President in his 2007 -2008 budget where the President promised to waive the loans completely ? , Premadasa asked.
There are about 30, 000 individuals in Hambantota alone who have been subjected to grave hardships by the Govt.’s demanding the re payment of loans which were waived earlier. Even today , there are over 1200,000 homeless. Now, the Maligawatte , Raddolugama, Mattegoda, Jayawadenagama and Rukmlagame housing programs too are not being implemented and even if the schemes exist , they are being given step motherly treatment, he bemoaned.
If the NHDA has no money to pay the salaries of its staff , the poor dwellers and borrowers cannot be burdened with hardships, the NHDA should look for some other way of solving its problems , he emphasized.
