Over 10,000 IDPs in camps have disappeared – what happened to them ?
(Lanka-e-News, August 31, 2009, 7.15PM) Over 10,000 refugees held in the IDP camps in Vavuniya have disappeared . The Vavuniya District Secretary has forwarded a report to the DIG north in this regard. A special investigation is being launched on the instructions of the DIG .

When the last phase of the battle was raging in Mulitivu Vellamuullivaikal ,the civilians in the Nandikadawal zone were asked by the Govt. to come over to the govt. controlled areas . In response to this request , over 300,000 civilians came over to the govt. zone. According to the list prepared by the Army there were 280,000 civilians.
Former Army General Fonseka , when speaking to the media on an earlier occasion said , 10,000 of the refugees who were identified as LTTE suspects were transferred to rehabilitation camps , while legal action has been filed against another 10,000.

When a count was taken of the refugees in the camps two months ago ,there is a shortfall of 10,000 refugees. This has been reported to the DIG North through Vavuniya District Secretary A.S.M. Charles about two weeks ago. Although attempts were made to get information on this , it is learnt that the District Secretary is out of the Island.
A superior Officer attached to the District secretariat who did not want to be named said , a large number of refugees who were transferred to hospitals did not return. There is also a possibility that at the early stages , there could have been a wrong count taken. . However , he said such a large shortfall in the number is inconceivable.

The Officer went on to add that this count was taken by a team of 20 District secretary officers on Govt.’s instructions . According to that statistic there should be around 265,000 refugees.

According to a daily newspaper today this difference of 10,000 is owing to refugees having bolted on the sly .Another weekend newspaper had stated earlier that around 20,000 refugees have bolted . On that basis , since Prabhakaran was killed three months ago , 110 to 220 refugees have escaped daily from the camps .

No matter what , the Opposition ,the civil Organizations, and western countries allege that these refugees kept trapped inside barbed wire fences without freedom of movement and under Army guard with nobody allowed to visit them is only comparable with the Hitler’s concentration camps.
