Sunday lankadeepa Editor who published bogus news escapes :reporter resigns
(Lanka-e-News, Jan.12, 2010, 8.00PM) Dayaseeli Liyanage, the reporter of the Lankadeepa newspaper who published a fabricated and false report on the 10th Sunday Lankadeepa attributed to TNA Leader Sampanthan M.P. based on an interview with him which Sampanthan denied, handed over her letter of resignation today (12) to the Administration Division and left the Office.

She resigned her post following an inquiry held by the Chairman of the Wijeya newspapers Ranjith Wijewardena yesterday (11), and when it was discovered by the that in the article she submitted to the Director of the Editorial Board contained false information.

According to information reaching Lanka e news, when Mr. Wijewardena conducted the inquiry, she had stated that she made this report based on the tapes which recorded the media conferences of Samapnthan, which she included into the interview reported in the newspaper. However, when it was inquired from her Daily mirror counterparts and other lankadeepa reporters, it was learnt that Dayaseeli Liyanage has not attended those Press briefings which she claimed she covered.
When she was further interrogated as to how she wrote on a media briefing which she did not attend, she had explained, she had got the information via telephone conversation with Sampanthan. The Editorial Board had asked her to give in writing the details of the telephone No. of Samapanthan and the time she spoke, to the Director of the Board Siri Ranasinghe, in which event they could verify the facts from the telephone co., the Chairman had told Dayaseeli.

Dayseeli had given a letter in response yesterday (11). But, later, today she had taken back that letter and left after tendering her resignation.
Meanwhile, the Wijeya newspapers media personnel have asked the Auhorities to take disciplinary action against Ariyananda Dambagahawatte who gave instructions to Dayseeli to publish this bogus news, and who is still in service without any inquiry against him.

It is reported that the reward for this bogus report is so far Rs. 20 lakhs.

Sources say, the UNF leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is getting ready to reveal shortly the Sunday Lankadeepa Editorís reward, the cheque No. and other relevant details.
