| Live telecast of results and Election Commissioner’s announcements disallowed clouded by grave doubts and suspicion –UNP goes to Courts |

(Lanka-e-News 31.Jan.2010 7.45PM) At a special Press briefing on the 28th with the participation of all the front line leaders , headed by UNP and opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe , the latter said there is grave doubt and suspicion in regard to the results announced. The results not being telecast live and the Elections Commissioner too deprived of his right to make his announcements live clearly indicates the Govt. has interfered with the election process and results.
Therefore , the UNP is filing legal action against these atrocious actions of the Govt. to annul the election result.
Already , the Party Gen. Secretary and the District leaders have been informed to compile a comprehensive report on all the corruption , illegalities and violence committed in the raging malpractices perpetrated during the elections, the Opposition leader underlined at the long discussion .
The Elections Commissioner not being allowed to make his announcements from his official venue and denying him live official pronouncements are serious violations and election crimes , he pointed out. These actions of the Govt. coupled with the Hotel ‘Cinnamon Lakeside’ where Gen. Fonseka, the Opposition party closest rival candidate to President Rajapakse , and the Opposition leaders were, being brought under a state of siege with over 300 security personnel surrounding it on the night when the results were announced are all a clear index that the govt. had manipulated this on premeditated plans to rig the results and give out falsified announcements .
There are clear and abundant reports that the entire computer technology operations at the Elections Commissioner ‘s office in relation to the election results was completely under the control of a brother of the President’s wife, and the results have been tampered with totally , Wickremesinghe pinpointed.
UNP Deputy leader Karu Jayasooriya , Gen. Secretary Tissa Attanayake ,John Ameratunge M.P., Rukman Senanayake, Vajira Abeywardena and Palitha Range Bandara also participated at the meeting.
I don’t accept these spurious election results and I will not abandon my people – General Fonseka
Opposition common Presidential candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka addressing a media briefing on the 27th at the Hotel Cinnamon Lakeside with the participation of other Opposition leaders said , although the Govt. has made an official announcement that he polled only about 42 lakhs votes , he is aware he has in truth received 10 lakhs votes more than those Govt. figures. Therefore , he will never abandon the people who had reposed their faith in him, any day , and under any circumstance.
Making his first speech after the announcement of election results to the media which comprised a large number of foreign media personnel , emphasized that he will not accept the election results which are a total fabrication and a falsified version. He has already made arrangements to take legal action against the results, he noted.
On the Defense Secretary orders , his security personnel and his bullet proof vehicle have been withdrawn , immediately following the announcement of the results despite they being aware of the fact that he is the most vulnerable citizen in SL to terrorist attacks because he was the architect of the LTTE devastation . Indeed , it is this very Govt. which acclaimed him as the war Hero for having defeated an enemy they themselves believed to be indestructible earlier. The Govt. must be nursing the notion by all these cruel actions it can discourage and demoralize me. On the other hand it has given me fresh impetus to fight for the cause of the downtrodden people . Let me warn the Govt. and the President I will never let down my legion of supporters and run away from the country to the Govt.’ s delight , he firmly asserted.
Since the day elections was announced , the Govt. had been fully engaged in anti democratic actions and election law violations. Even the defense Secretary who should be exemplary was violating the laws openly and defiantly. He also added that if the Govt. tries to arrest him , he has two options , either to surrender or challenge and crusade for his rights.

He will be compelled to seek Court order to restore his security . Pointing to the large contingent of soldiers surrounding the Hotel , he said , this is the way this power greedy Govt. reacts after an election and treats a war Hero who was the closest rival to the President at the Presidential elections. Isn’t this attitude bringing disgrace on the Govt. itself ? he asked.
The media posed the question , if these results are not acceptable to the people why is that people did not come out in protest ?

The General in reply said , they will certainly protest , but those who worked with him must take a brief rest .

You said , the Army’s reaction can be seen on the 27 th ,why did you say that ?

The Army will not do anything against its own sections. Yet , 90% of these Officers respect his word , he stated.
In the future , after discussions with the other political party leaders supporting him , he will take a course of action , he pointed out .
At this meeting , Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe , Somawansa Amerasinghe , Mnao Ganeshan . Anura Dissanayake, Karu Jayasooriya , Jayalath Jayawardena and Sarath Manamendra also were present .
