| Loudspeakers at Mammoth opposition protest rally at Colombo removed by the Police |

 (Lanka-e-news 03.Feb.2010 9.00PM) The permission given by the Police for the use of loudspeakers at the mammoth protest rally organized at Hyde Park , Colombo today (03) was withdrawn suddenly by the Police at the last moment. The rally was to protest against the recent Presidential election ,and the theme was, the ‘Presidential election was corrupt –do not accept the election results – let us unite in the name of Democracy’
The Police had suddenly removed the loudspeakers which were installed at the venue of the meeting. When the organizers asked the Police why the permission was withdrawn at the last moment after being giving earlier , the Police had stated that they were acting on orders from the top.
There was a massive crowd at the Hyde Park for the meeting at about 4.15 p.m. Large crowds which came in hired buses spending their monies to attend the meeting were turned back because of the high handed action of the Authorities.
Meanwhile , at the initial stages , the Police also obstructed the crowds entering the Hyde Park.
The pictures depict the JVP leader Somawansa Amerasinghe along with the huge JVP procession arriving at the Hyde Park from the Lipton circus where they first assembled, and the massive gathering at the Hyde Park following the joining of the UNF Leaders and the supporters at the venue of the meeting for the rally. |
