| President pardons SB and appoints him as Udunuwara Organizer |

(Lanka-e-News 2010.Feb.05 9.00AM) The former UNP National Organizer S.B. Dissanayake who was earlier found guilty on charges of contempt of Court and sentenced to two years jail sentence , but on a Presidential pardon was released prematurely ,was now fully pardoned by the President Mahinda Rajapakse and has been appointed as the Udunuwara SLFP Organizer.
The President who is vested with the power to grant Pardon under section 34 (1) of the constitution has signed this official letter of pardon right in front of S B Dissanayake on the 3rd.
A politician who is sentenced to two years is deprived of his civil rights for 7 years and cannot contest elections . Yet , Dissanayake contested the Central Provincial Council (PC) elections under the UNP ticket and won , whereby he was elected as the Opposition leader for the Council , while the verdict of the Court is still pending in regard to his petition to request the Court to review its previous decision with a view not to debar his civil rights. |

Sometime ago , Dissanayake resigned from the post of Opposition leader of the PC and the UNP , and re joined the SLFP . He was engaged in the President’s election campaign at the recent Presidential elections.
When Dissanayake was granted the pardon on the 3rd , a 1000 prisoners in 37 prisons also received Presidential pardons for release . |
