President signs agreement with Russia to import Rs.30 billion worth arms
(Lanka-e-News, Feb.07, 2010, 5.20PM) According to a Reuter news report, the President Rajapakse who is on an official tour of Russia is to sign an agreement with Russia for the import of arms to SL to the value of Rs. 30 billion (US $ 300 million) on a loan, for the Armed Forces.

During the war India, China, Pakistan and Russia helped SL in diverse ways to defeat the LTTE. Assistance by way of weapons and strategies were immense.
When the Reuter news Agency has inquired about this arms deal from the President’s office, they had been told that these arms are necessary because SL does not produce arms and weapons for the Forces.

Following the end of the war in May 2009, after Gen Fonseka was appointed as the Chief of Defense staff he cancelled an Arms import order for US $ 200 million from Pakistan which was pending. This latest agreement is considered as the deal for the biggest quantity of arms to be ever imported to SL.

SF was hammered by government and told that he is going to take over country when tried to bring arms after war, but what is the justification now to bring arms worth 300 million usd now? MR you are playing with money of innocent people in this country, who blindly voted for you, it's very sad to say this

Haven't seen anywhere how long this deals is for. Despite war is end, Sri Lanka's military need weapons to replace their expired ones in many years to come. Thats something any government do. I hope they are not bringing this $300millions of weapons in to the country in one go. Lets see how the government gonna justify this.

It is clear. These would be used against any form of dissent. Please remember that we are heading for a dark period of autocratic rule, not experienced before. We are a pathetic laughing stock and a typical 3rd world democracy with one single family dictating terms. These would also help MR's family (sons, brothers etc. etc.) consolidate their grip on power. These are tools of suppression of people's democratic rights. He not only robbed "victory" by devious means, but now wants to further perpetuate his reign of state terror by imposing his will on the populace.

In order to justify 30 billion how I think is, before it was 15% of the population considered rebellion. Now total democracy in stake and have to defend from more than 60% of the population.

oh sure we need all those arms now that the war is over and we are supposedly at peace. that money could have been spent on food, shelter and clothing or development of infrastucture. But then our glorious leader would not get the doctorate would he? must be the most expensive doctorate ever. the length our politicians are willing to go to in order to get recognised as "educated"! I remember CBK declining a doctorate offered from the peradeniya university - seems to be something worthwhile remembering.

Ah! Helping hand at war, and this is the return favor. But the war ended and why Srilanka need such an amount of arms. SF canceled the deal as he has the knowledge of the requirements after the war. Hope the armament are not outdated as MIGs.
