Registration of UNF flounders
(Lanka-e-News, Feb.09, 2010, 9.55 AM) There are signs that the UNF which was formed with a number of constituent parties of the Opposition may not be able to contest as a valid registered party at the Upcoming General elections.

Under the new rules and regulations, a new political party cannot be registered until one month has elapsed from the date of an election, and during the period when the Parliament has been dissolved.

Accordingly, if the UNF constituted of the UNP, the SLMC,DNF, SLFP (M) wing is to be registered it has to wait until the 26th of February 2010.

The Elections Commissioner has rejected the application which was urgently made for the registration of the new party explaining that it cannot be entertained until 30 days have elapsed following an election held.
If the Parliament is dissolved before the 26th of February, the UNF will not be able to register as a new party.

According to reports, the President can dissolve Parliament any moment from now, which means that the UNF will not be able to contest as a registered new party at the upcoming elections.

New rules and regulations made by EC are likely to favour the current government. Because if a new party to register, it should proceeds after 26th Feb. 2010 and the parliment should not dessolve prior to 27th Feb. 2010. That is not fair. I agree with the first comment that EC is unreliable man, that's what happened for the Presidential Results.

Pessimism is our current forte. The EC commissioner is custom-made for elections that would suit the ruling clique. For the past ten years only one single election was conducted in a proper way - 2002. That was a miracle. The current EC will circumvent, bifurcate etc. etc. any condition that poses a hindrance to manipulation of elections by the regime as it gives him peace and harmony and assures a trouble-free job. He is the most inconsistent, inefficient and unreliable EC ever to hold that position.
