(Lanka-e-News, Feb.09, 2010, 10.05AM) President Rajapakse had declared that he would have no truck whatsoever with Rauff Hakeem, the leader of the SLMC party representing the Muslim majority at the forthcoming General elections.
The President has told this to All Ceylon Muslim Congress leader Rishard Badurdeen at a discussion with him following a Cabinet meeting in Kandy on the day after the independence day, adding that he would not have any political alliance with The SLMC.
Though the President had to make this declaration because of Badurdeen’s pressure brought to bear on him; it has come to light on the basis of the recent Presidential elections results, the Muslims of the North and East have directly voted against the President. |

Of the Muslim leaders and parties with the President, at the Presidential elections, except for Faizer Musthafa‘s electorate, Harispattuwa, Kandy, in all other electorates they faced humiliating defeats. Even Faizer Mustahfa though he was a Muslim, could not poll the Muslim votes even of Akurana. The victory of his was because of the Sinhala votes from the Sinhala Districts he represents.
The govt. and the Muslim parties with it are carrying on a vicious propaganda against the SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem. Badurdeen alleges that at the Presidential elections, not only the Muslims, but even the Tamils have been duped by the SLMC. |

The muslim parties with the Govt. had all lost in their electorates. Mannar represented by Minister Rishard Badurdeen, Najeeb A Majeed at Mutur, Ameer Ali at Kalkudah, Minister Athaulla at Potuvil, Ministers Ferial Ashroff and Nijamudeen at Kalmunai, and Minister Baiz at Puttalam District.
Going by the All Island results it is very clear that the majority of the Muslim community is not with President Rajapakse.
Because the Muslims did not vote for Rajapakse, Eastern province Muslims are being subjected to severe Govt. harassment and murder threats. Specially those Muslim Govt. servants of the Education sector in the North suspected of having not voted with the Govt. are being given transfers and persecuted.
The Education Director Pandai Pani was transferred because he supported the TNA at the Presidential elections, while Education Ministry Assist Secretary was transferred out and his place was taken over by Education Director M.T.S Nisham formerly of Kalmunai Division. There are reports that in all other Govt. Depts. too similar transfers are being effected as part of Govt. ‘s political victimization plan which is also aimed at preparing the groundwork to create an environment favorable to the Govt. at the upcoming General elections. |
