| Over 35 lakhs Sri Lankans in extreme poverty !– Census and Statistics Dept. |

(Lanka-e-News, Feb.27, 2010, 6.40PM) According to the Census and statistics Dept., as great as 15.2% of the Sri Lankan population is in extreme poverty unable even to find a square meal a day.
SL’s total population is 24 million.
The basic expenditure per individual per month is Rs. 3079/- for his basic food needs for the month of January as measured by the poverty measuring index., the Census and statistics Dept. says. |

The poverty line for January in the Colombo District for the month for January was Rs.3430/-. In Districts, Gampaha, Kandy, Galle and Hambantota the poverty line is Rs. 3262, Rs.3155,Rs3166 and Rs.2968 respectively, the census and statistics Dept. had stated. |
