(Lanka-e-News 31.March.2010 11.25PM) UNF and Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking on the occasion of the completion of 50 years of the JSS golden jubilee celebrations at the Sri Kotha today (31) ,told the JSS members present that , the President Mahinda Rajapakse who has now realized that he cannot receive two third majority is asking for a simple majority at the up coming elections. Regardless of his pleas , the UNF the main opposition party can assure that it will win at least 115 to 116 seats he added.
Today the UPFA candidates are engaged in bitter fights over preferential votes. They are fighting in Kandy ; they even hooted . At Galle too they hooted . At Moneragala they had fisticuffs. Now the UPFA is divided on preferential votes. Such events occur when winning or losing ? he asked. Even Mahinda Rajapske is today aware that the Opposition will win with a majority , he noted.
After the defeat of the UNP at elections in 1970 , J R Jayawardena brought in the proportional representation system to give the UNP the edge at every election. From 1989 until today , there had been five elections ; in 1989 and 2001 , the UNP got the majority . Hence . it is day dream of the Govt. to assume that it can elect a Govt. according to its fancy. |

When the UNP was in most difficult circumstances, 83 MPs were elected without any floating votes. On that basis , if 15 to 20 TNA M Ps and if the JVP also wins seats , making up 105 MPs is no big task for the main opposition party, he pinpointed. This position , the President is well aware. That is why he is jittery and trying all the tricks in the book not to hold a fair election , Ranil observed. |
