Slap in the face for Ranil from UNP National Lawyers Association
(Lanka-e-News 29.april.2010 8.45AM) The UNP National Lawyers’s association President Upul Jayasooriya stated that the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is stooping to activities aimed at driving a wedge among the members of the Association and a conspiracy to dismantle it.
He made this accusation at a Press briefing held on the 27th.

The Association President pointed out that , by these actions , the problems already confronted by the UNP are being further complicated . Recently the Association summoned a meeting at the Sri Kotha to express gratitude to the members for the service they rendered during the Presidential and General elections. Members expressed their personal views regarding the need for structural changes in the party including leadership at the meeting. But , the Association took no decisions in regard to what changes should be brought about specifically. Instead , the Association decided to postpone the meeting to the 7th of May to discuss and take decisions on the structural changes and to intimate to the leader .

Accordingly , while the meeting is to be held on the 7th of May, about 25 to 30 Lawyers have held a meeting at Cambridge Terrace headed by the UNP leader and have had discussions. The official views expressed at the earlier meeting of the Association had been severely criticized at the Cambridge place meeting. This meeting was convened not by the Lawyers , but by the former UNP Gen. Secretary and an economist who had now been appointed as a National list UNP M P. This meeting headed by the UNP leader was held with the sole object of vilifying and degrading the Lawyers Association .
The UNP leader and the officers must act with greater responsibility . Indeed , the UNP leader entered politics through this Association. If criticisms are to be leveled against the Party leader , it has to be done through the Party , and not here .Our members have been given an opportunity to express their views on the 7th.. We are to take steps to forward views , charges , criticisms and changes to be effected following the decisions on the 7th.Lawyers are not a group to be used when the party needs them and be discarded when the party’s purpose is served. We express our thoughts and views freely and independently . We will also not hesitate to present them before the people.

Secretary of the National Lawyers Association, Gunaratne Wanninayake and Deputy Secretary Lakshman Galhena also participated at the discussions.
