(Lanka-e-News 30.April.2010 5.00AM) According to reliable sources from the Govt. medical stores , in the next few months, patients who seek treatment at Govt. Hospitals will not be able to get even a pill. Such a dire situation has arisen in the stock position in the Govt. medical stores.
They add , that in the Govt. Hospitals , already there is a 50% shortage in all kinds of drugs. This grave situation has been sparked by the Govt. having not allocated monies this year to the Health Ministry for import of drugs. Following the Presidential elections and the last general elections, the Govt. has not presented a budget to implement its fiscal policies for this year. Only a vote on account was presented. No monies were allocated to the Ministries including the health under the vote on account. The Govt. now says , until it passes the budget in 2010 November , a vote on account will be presented. The sources pointed out that if funds are not allocated in the vote on account for import of drugs , the situation will become most perilous and disastrous. |

Although the drugs necessary for the Health Dept. have been ordered to the suppliers , the letters of credit for their imports have not been opened. Consequently , drug imports to the country had been stalled.
The officers of the Govt. medical stores state with concern that no supplier in the world can provide supplies as soon as the order is made. |
