Former president CBK's security chief jailed for 4 years
(Lanka-e-News, June 30, 2010, 10.50AM) A former presidential security chief was jailed Tuesday for four years on a conviction of threatening a fellow police officer during an election campaign rally nine years earlier, a court official said.

Nihal Karunaratne, a former police deputy inspector general, was an influential figure during the 1994-2004 presidency of Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Kandy Provincial High Court Judge Preethi Padman Soorasena, after inquiring into the indictment against Hapuarachchige Nihal Karunaratna (56), the former director of the Presidential Security Division, for threatening to kill IP R.M.M. Goonaratna Banda, a former officer in charge of the Haguranketha Police Station, convicted and sentenced the accused to four years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 50,000 /- or, in default, an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment.
On November 20, 2001, at the Poramadulla Central College playground in the Hanguranketha Police Division, the convicted officer had said: “You be careful, do not allow a single line of flags or a single poster to appear. If any appear, I will look after you. There aren’t two Presidents; you will be killed and hidden,” according to the indictment against the accused.

After pronouncing the verdict, the High Court Judge, addressing the court, said, “As the accused was a high ranking officer when he committed the offence, the offence committed must be condemned for the common good.” State Counsel, Attorney at law Gihan Kulathunga led the evidence and asked the H.C.Judge to give a punishment that would act as a deterrent.Attorneys at law Dhammika Ariyadasa, Nimal Suraweera and Mrs. Jeevani Herath appeared for the accused.

Good judgment?!! Why does it not apply to all::::: like people who support the government for example.??? Why are the judgments too harsh on people not supporting the government? In that case how many years should Dr. M. Silva be sent?????? Iyooo!!!! this is a joke. Our judiciary is becoming a laughing stock.

I am glad the courts have sentenced this rascal to prison as no one is above the law.I think he had links with the underworld gangs. This is a terrible indictment on CBK to have these fellows around them.I hope the our President be careful about the company he keeps as the day of reckoning will be when the leaders are out of power.Perhaps this fellow will have all the privileges in prison?Perhaps CBK might visit him as she did that at Kandy as the Prez.
