CJ instructed AG: Action against the Editor of ‘Lanka’ within two weeks
(Lanka-e-News 10.July.2010 1020PM) Chief Justice Asoka de Silva has instructed the Attorney general to file plaint and take Supreme Court action against the Editor of the ‘Lanka Sunday Edition’ within two weeks after the inquiries are conducted by the CID into the news article that was published purportedly defamatory of the Supreme Court (SC) and the Attorney General . He had instructed the CID to forward a report within a week following the inquiry.

The Chief Justice made the two orders after the SC examined the petition that the headline news under the caption ‘Courts pressurized by the President’ in the Lanka Sunday Edition of the 27th of June constitutes a ‘ contempt of Court’.
The petition was heard by a panel of judges comprising Chief Justice Asoka De Silva, Nimal Gamini Amaratunge and K. Sripavan.

Though the Court held that there could be a contempt of court owing to the article published , the writer of the article Jagath Gunatileke did not appear in Court despite the Court issuing notice summoning him.
