Our country is being sidelined internationally because of the inequities and sufferings inflicted on the people by the Govt. –Sajith Premadasa
(Lanka-e-News, July 15, 2010, 9.30AM) Hambantota District UN P M P sajith Premadasa addressing a media briefing at the Opposition media unit on the 14th said, Sri Lanka is being sidelined internationally and its image is befouled because of the Govt.’s deplorably ruthless policies of inflicting injustices and sufferings on the people.

Because of the Govt.’s attitude and abysmal failures, gloom is looming ominously over the country, for, we are losing whatever privileges, benefits, aid and support we could have received internationally.

Even though the Forces successfully stamped out terrorism from the country by their exceptional skills, the Govt. had not lived up to the expectations of the people after the war victory: the relief, the peace, the human rights, civil and political rights have not been duly secured for the people. The economic development of the country has crashed and the economy is in a shambles, he pointed out.
The Foreign Organizations, powers and their representatives have to interfere in the internal affairs of the country because the Govt. had not been able to secure for the people their human rights, political and civil rights even after the war is over.

The Govt. after the war ended had a splendid opportunity to resolve the ethnic issue which it is aware was also the cause of the devastating war which ruined the country for over thirty years. Yet, the Govt. had failed to create ethnic harmony, camaraderie, peace, unity and friendliness among the communities. Instead the Govt. had only exploited the draconian laws which were introduced during the war to meet the exigencies and as temporary expedients. Abusing these laws it is further tightening the screws on the people’s liberties, democratic rights and freedom of speech with a view to strengthening its despotic powers and dictatorial ambitions over the people and the democratic Institutions. The war victory has only imbued this Govt. with that just one maniacal obsession, he observed.

Well said Sajith. The International Community would like to see that good governance and the rule of law prevails in Sri Lanka. That is why they expect certain International Covenants that enhance citizens' rights to be enacted, why they ask for the 17th Amendment to the Constitution to be implemented, why the independence of the Judiciary should be safeguarded, why politicisation of the Public Service and the Police should be stopped to ensure their impartiality. If you do not have the interlect to realise the importance of doing the right thing there is no point of complaning of the loss of GSP + with a false claim of loss of sovereignity. If you

This aptly sums up the current scenario. The government has simply negated the positives of "victory" over "terrorism". Instead, arrogance, conceit and obsession with power, and the desire to hold on to power at any cost - have all plunged the country into an abyss - if viewed from the correct perspectives. In terms of dealing with any kind of crisis, internal or international - there is hardly any good governance or states-craftsmanship being displayed by this govt. The two episodes involving the EU
