Land owners in high security zones will not be given back their lands –Keheliya
(Lanka-e-News, July 16, 2010, 10.00AM) Media and information Minister Keheliya Rambukwela speaking at the media briefing at the Ministry complex yesterday (15) to intimate the Cabinet decisions, said, the owners of lands in the high security zones of the North and East where the Army camps are situated, will not get back their lands even if they are in possession of deeds.

The security of the country is most vital, and high security zones where the Army camps are located are extremely important. Therefore the ownership of the land in these places must belong to the Govt. and not to any other for reasons of National security, he added.

The Minister gave the above answer in reply to a question posed by the media that the Govt. shifted these displaced persons from these zones on the ground that it is temporary, and that they will be re settled back in these places, according to the fisher folks and the people of these areas. Then, why is the Govt. now not re settling these people of these areas in the high security zones clearing the Army camps in the North and East?.
Rambukwela pointed out that America is establishing high security zones outside of it in South Korea despite opposition from the people of that country. In SL even though the war was won (after 30 long years of fighting), it is paramount that steps are taken that this disastrous evil does not rear its head again. If that is to be ensured, priority to the needs of the High security zones must be given, he noted.

Question from the media..
The Tamil people of the North and East fought a war for 30 years based on their lands, language, culture, political and social issues. Now, after the war is over, if the Govt. is going to plunder their lands, isn’t it creating an environment for another conflict ?

A
If lands are to be plundered by the Govt. those lands must be owned by others. The ownership of these lands belong to the Govt. Today, what those people need are not lands; what is important to them is not lands, it is the basic facilities and necessities for their day to day living. The Govt. has demarcated 5700 acres in the Kalpitiya area for tourism development. Those lands are State lands. We cannot stop development programs because people are settled there. Whether it is to the liking of those people or not, the Govt. has to go ahead with its programs.

If there is to be another conflict to erupt, it has to be because the people of the North are starving, deprived of earnings, prosperity and their children’s future. Such a situation will not arise again, the Minister assured.

"Security" is the excuse that the Israelis used to gobble up the lands of the Palestinians for over 60 years and still the Israelis have NOT found that. Will the Sri Lankan govt. succeed where the Israelis failed in spite of the UNQUESTIONED SUPPORT of the sole Super Power and the West? A foolish move by the government, prodded on by the extremists within, which is sure to reignite the war which the country can ill-afford.
