(Lanka-e-News, July 16, 2010, 10.00AM) When the ‘Debiddo’ drama directed by Prasanna Vithanage was staged in a Colombo Hall on the 23rd, the CID had suddenly swooped on the Hall and questioned Vithanage.
It is learnt that the CID had raided the Hall just because they had received a complaint that there is a scene in the drama where there was cigarette smoking. The CID had told Vithanage, they made this sudden raid on account of such a complaint.
Deputy Leader of the UNP, Karu Jayasooriya, who condemned this incident said, after the censor Board and the stage and Screening Performance authorities have given permission, the action of the CID interrupting the show and causing inconvenience to all is most deplorable and unbecoming. The worst part is, it has been done at the behest of a politician, he pointed out. |

Hereunder is the news release of Karu Jayasooriya in this connection.
This show was staged by Prassanna Vithanage after the Public censor ship and the stage and screening Performance Board had given due approval. Yet, Vithanage has of his own accord decided to withdraw some of the main cigarette smoking scenes from the show.
Hence, it is our view that suddenly a complaint being made to the excise Dept. officer and the CID raiding the show cant be a coincidence, but a calculated premeditated plan to disrupt the show of Vithanage. |

It will be very obvious to any lover of screen and stage, arts and theater of this country and
those who respect Democratic rights that there is a dastardly and obnoxious political motive behind this whole episode.
There is another issue that emerges from this untoward conduct of the Authorities, whether the Govt. had made it a policy that stage and screen should not show scenes of smoking, and whether the Govt. has given notice of this to the artistes, producers and Directors of the screen and stage?
We Let it be made clear that we are not advancing this argument to promote smoking or intoxication.
Our view is that political mischief makers and obnoxious political motives should not stand in the way of stage and screen performances, and militate against the growth and development of Arts and the theater in this country. |
