(Lanka-e-News 17.July.2010 11.55PM) As the dengue fever has reached epidemic proportions in the country , for the first time in Sri Lanka’s history , a zone – the Dehiwela –Galkissa municipal Council division has been declared as an ’infectious disease’ zone.
In the Dehiwela- Galkissa division , in the month of June , 139 cases of dengue had been reported. As at 14th July , the number of cases had increased to 190 , or a further 51 cases had been detected. After one patient died , this zone has been named as an ‘infectious disease zone’
There are 2100 dengue patients across the country . One Doctor and 150 other patients have died of this disease so far .
Majority of the patients who died are children.
According to reports from govt. Hospitals, there are 2100 patients in the Govt. Hospitals Island wide. But this number can be more because the patients who take treatment in private Hospitals are not taken into account in this reckoning ., Nursing officers Association states. |

To arrest this epidemic from spreading , it has been decided to appoint a Presidential task Force . For over a year the Medical/ Health officers have been involved in squabbles and controversies over the import of B T I Bacteria from Cuba to control the disease.
According to the latest reports , the import of this life saving bacteria has been delayed because of kickbacks and commission collection issues – the latest fad in SL on Govt.. transactions and deals. |
