Summon Army Commander before privileges Committee –Gen. Fonseka requests Speaker
(Lanka-e-News, July 21, 2010, 11.30 PM) Colombo District M P Gen. Fonseka made a request to the speaker yesterday (20) in Parliament to summon the Army Commander before the privileges Committee for committing breach of privilege by not permitting Gen. Fonseka to attend the meetings which were held in Parliament of the Health Ministry and Sate administration as well as the Foreign affairs Ministry advisory working Committee.

Fonseka informed the Speaker that though he was informed to be present for the two working Committee meetings, the Army Commander did not grant him permission. Despite the prison officers being ready to take him to Parliament, because the Army Commander did not allow him, he was denied the opportunity to attend Parliament.
Despite the Court’s clear unequivocal directive confirming that he must be allowed to attend Parliament without any hindrance or obstruction, he being denied the right to attend the two working Committee meetings constitutes a breach of his Parliamentary privilege as an MP, Fonseka pointed out.

Fonseka therefore requested the Speaker to summon the Army Commander and the other relevant officers responsible before the Parliamentary privileges Committee.
Chamal Rajapakse in reply stated that he would take steps after investigating the matter.

No body is above the Law. If the Army Commander has prevented an MP from attending to his Parluiamentary duties as alleged maximum punishment under the Law should be meted out.

Will the Speaker uphold Parliamentary Privileges? A good test case. Lets wait and see.
