UNP supporter who set fire to himself protesting to resolve the internal party conflicts dies
(Lanka-e-News, July 27, 2010, 5.15 PM) A senior supporter, Rienzie Algama of the UNP who set fire to himself in front of the UNP Headquarters, Sri Kotha yesterday evening (26) succumbed to his injuries today at the National Hospital, Colombo.

Late Rienzie Algama is a resident from Kelaniya and joined the UNP during the period of Late J.R. Jayawardena. It is learnt that he is a relative of Late General Lucky Algama.
Algama had been thoroughly and constantly disillusioned and mentally disturbed over the disputes and conflicts raging within the UNP since of late, had reportedly set fire to himself in protest demanding the party to resolve its conflicts. Even when those around tried to save him, he had stated he is resorting to this action in despair on account of the party squabbles and conflicts and told them not to attempt to save him.

There are several stories floating around regarding this 'suicide'. Mr. Algama is understood to have spent long hours with an Assistant of Ranil Wickremasinghe at his Cambridge Terrace Office. Voice cuts and written statements are understood to have been obtained. Inducing a person to commit suicide is also a punishable offence. Police should investigate this incident thoroughly to determine the background to this 'suicide' and bring to book any one who had induced Mr. Algama to commit this totally unnecessary act.

This is an unprecedented first. Of course there will be unsympathetic reactions from various quarters to describe this person as mentally unbalanced. However if the facts are really true, this is an act of self-sacrifice not only for himself but for hundreds and thousands of UNP'ers who hope against hope wait for that miraculous ressurection and re-emergence of this " socio-economic mosaic" which is a national institution. It is unbelievable but if true, we have to reflect on why a person would resort to physically crucifying himself for the sake of a political party. A party that has lost its way, lost its sense of direction, vision and groping in the dark. According to this report, this person faced with disillusionment died for his beliefs, his convictions. This is a true reflection on the plight of the vast majority of normal people who time and again, place faith in their choice, but to have it dashed repeatedly becuase the party they believe in cannot rise to their level of expectation. UNP the one time main bulwark - against political forces that polarized the country in terms of race and religion purely to gain power, against governments (once installed) that attempted at despotic, dictatorial and anti-democratic measures in order to prolong their stay against peoples choice - against governments and rulers who adopted short-term populist measures without any regard for the long term ramifications - is unfortunately plagued with individuals afflicted by opportunism, selfishness, conceit, egoism etc. Unless the UNP attempts to rise above this muck, this regime and many more regime of this nature will hold sway. Lets hope this personal sacrifice (of the greatest magnitude) will open the eyes of the leaders of the UNP at all levels.

Poor Algama, in Sri Lanka politics, there is no enemies. you sacrifices your life on behalf on UNP, but can UNP look after you??? No party or no politician can help you or me in Sri Lanka. They are looking after themselves and their relatives only.today the situation is such in Mother Sri Lanka. Poor masses always being given promises during election campaign and thereafter you know very well. now we are heading for a Hitler's rule in Sri Lanka. so, therefore all Sri Lankans innocent people, those who do not have any party politics and no relations to any politician take care. in the coming years you may witness the changes in Sri Lanka politics. May the Almighty bless the people of Sri Lanka.
