Sarasavi student murder: father and son exchanging letters to dodge the issue -UNP Gen. Secretary
(Lanka-e-News, July 28, 2010, 10.25PM) Addressing a media briefing at the UNP media unit today (28), UNP Gen. Secretary Tissa Attanayake said, the Rajapakse Govt.’s favorite preoccupation is breaking promises.

The President himself promised at the Presidential elections that public servants’ salaries will be increased by Rs. 2500/- per month in January 2010. That promise was not fulfilled. The President and Basil Rajapakse promised to the University professors Association on 31st January 2008 to increase the monthly salaries of the Professors. That promise also evaporated into thin air. The Govt. also promised to give a 25% to 50% education allowance until the salary increases are given. That too was not honored. Then it promised to grant a 20% additional interest to the fixed deposits of the senior citizens over 60 years. That promise too has been broken from the 30th of June, Attanayake pointed out.
The President had stated at the Temple Trees yesterday, the knowledge of the intelligentsia must be imparted on behalf of the country. The President made a similar request to the professionals when the war ended. While he is making such requests on the one hand, he is on the other hand creating an environment today for the intellectuals of the country - the Professors to take to the streets in protest to increase their salaries, he observed. The Minister for Higher education S B Dissanayake admitted that the University lecturers ought to be given a higher salary. But, when the Professors staged a one day token strike yesterday, the University Grants Commission had decided to cut a day’s pay of those who participated in the strike. Is it by these kinds of false promises and obnoxious policies the President going to make this country an Asian model, he is crowing about? Attanayake asked.

Referring to Naamal Rajapakse‘s letter to his father, the President to appoint a Commission to investigate the killing of the Ruhunu University student, he said ,nothing can be more ridiculous than this, for this is something that could have been done at home between the son and father. All these clownish acts are to somehow mislead the investigations. No matter what father and son are trying to do between them regardless, all we want is an impartial inquiry and punishment meted out duly, he pinpointed.

Why a Commission? Is this admission that the Investigative arm of the law is incapable of getting at the truth? And why a letter from the son to the father? One gets the feeling that the idea behind the letter is for the son to get some political mileage
