(Lanka-e-News -25.Dec.2015, 11.45PM) This is not a story taken out from Ripley’s ‘Believe it or not ‘. Rather this is a story that would even make Ripley to disbelieve because of its egregious ridiculousness.This is based on a true event in Sri Lanka .
During the recent presidential export awards ceremony , a defunct long closed company too was given away an award ! based on reports.
This presidential award was given away to the company under the category of exporters of electrical and electronic equipments . This company under the name of Everest Industrial Lanka Limited ,is a branch of Sharjah based Syrian Co. It was a Company which was mainly exporting refrigerators and deep freezers, located in the Katunayake Free trade zone, and currently completely closed down.
During the 100 days interim program of the government, the latter gave an undertaking that workers of the private sector shall be raised by Rs. 2500/- , and the employees of Everest Industrial Lanka Limited ,staged a strike based on that undertaking .However when this company agreed to grant a salary increase of Rs. 1000.00 only , the employees did not accept the offer . The Co. acting high handedly closed it down then according to its own whim and fancy.
If this Company with about 1000 employees registered with the Export Development Board (EDB) , is to close down duly , two and half months salary should be paid by it to each of its employee , whereas this Company did not abide by that requirement.
Allowing a Company to close down , which closure is not based on the grounds of ‘no income,’ and merely owing to a strike staged by the employees is a very serious issue and creates a pernicious precedent . Hence it is the duty of the government to intervene and re open it.
On the contrary ,if the president deems a Presidential award shall be given away to such a company that has closed down according to its own will and pleasure ,throwing out its employees to the streets most ruthlessly, nothing can be more reprehensible and unpardonable .
In any case , may we take over the thankless task of enlightening and educating these buffoons involved who enjoy tomfoolery more than discharging their duties duly ,when an award is being given to a Company , it is not only its strength of emplyees but the cordial relationship between the employer and employees that prevailed which is most paramount.
In the modern world , the latest business concept under the name of ‘Go Green business, ’ what is considered as one important ingredient is the happy participation of employees. Therefore giving away a presidential award to a company that closed down at its own will and pleasure to the detriment of its employees is to de -motivate the other companies which practise benevolence.
It is a pity , while president Maithripala Sirisena is waxing eloquent that he has 40 years experience in politics , is still stumbling into such monumental irretrievable blunders like a novice and an ignoramus. At least shouldn’t it be probed , whether the recipient of the award is living or dead?
