President’s act of benevolence !

(Lanka-e-News -09.Jan.2016, 1.05PM) President Maithripala Sirisena has performed an act of benevolence .That is he has decided to pardon the suspected assassin Selvaraja Jeneevan sentenced for ten years in jail , who supposedly  made an assassination bid on the president.

Selvaraja Jeneevan alias Seyam was sentenced to ten years in jail by the Polonnaruwa high court on charges of  attempting to assassinate Maithripala Sirisena long before the latter became the president.

The suspect was charged under the Prevention of Terrorism Act only on the confession supposedly made by him , and until  the verdict was delivered he was in remand custody for ten long years .Selvaraja while pending an appeal filed against the court decision sought presidential pardon through a petition.

Taking into consideration the grounds that Selvaraja was indicted only on his confession , and his  period of ten long years in remand custody , the president has decided to grant him presidential pardon to Selvaraja who was alleged as having come  to kill him.

The lawyers for Selvaraja revealed that the petition filed in the appeal court is being withdrawn today  because a presidential  pardon cannot be  granted without the withdrawal of the appeal filed in court.
