(Lanka-e-News -13.Jan.2016, 9.00PM) Sarath Abrew the Supreme court (SC) judge who is charged with committing rape on the domestic working in his house was served with the charge sheet yesterday(12) by SC judge Padman Surasena.
A case was filed in the SC based on two charges of using physical force and committing rape on the domestic , a 37 years old woman working in his house on 26 th June 2015 or thereabout . There is also a case filed in the magistrate court against him based on charges of assault by attacking her with a pistol to her head causing minor injuries.
The retired Attorney General Yuvanjana Wanasundara filed the charges against Abrew before the former went on retirement.
After the charge sheet was served on Abrew he pleaded guilty. He was thereafter enlarged on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000.00 and two surety bails in sums of Rs. 100,000.00 each.The two sureties were Rohan Sarook Abeywardena who calls himself as a journalist , and Sisira Kumara De Silva , an officer of Divi Neguma development.
Lawyer Thirantha Waraliyaddha appeared on behalf of Abrew.
After the police informed judge Keerthi Padman that Abrew left the court through the exit used by the judges , without signing the bail papers and giving his fingerprint , he was called back , and his signature on the bail papers plus finger print were taken.
The case was postponed until the 23 rd of May.
It is to be noted that a criminal case is being heard against a SC judge for the first time in Sri Lanka . When Abrew tried to file a fundamental rights petition to thwart the criminal case already filed against him , the SC day before yesterday(11) , dismissed his petition without a hearing.
It is a matter for regret , when the victim the poor domestic was in hospital following the assault inflicted on her by Abrew no media reported on the episode at that time. Only Lanka e news always first with the news and best with the views which dared to reveal the facts frankly , fearlessly and forthrightly, once again demonstrating it always espouses the cause of justice on behalf of the underdogs and the downtrodden, come what may , and will never slink even under monumental pressures – if there are more media organizations like us in SL , there would be fewer individuals daring to commit crimes using their inordinate powers and evil influence.
