(Lanka-e-News -06.June.2016, 11.00PM) Following the conflagration that erupted at the central armory in the Kosgama camp Hall of Sri Lanka army yesterday evening , so far one army soldier has died and two civilians sustained injuries . Incidentally , this is one of the two main armories belonging to the army, official sources of the army revealed. The remains of the dead soldier was taken to Homagama hospital while the two civilian casualties were admitted to the Avisawella hospital .
According to Lanka e news inside information service group of the army that went to the vicinity of the holocaust ,on the face of it , a large extent of land has been destroyed. About 10 shops have been damaged , and of them three are totally devastated.
This armory though had been described as a central armory of the army , what was contained in it were bullets of all kinds only, There were bullets of weapons ranging from T56 , RPG and Multi barrel stored in it.
There are about 30 eye witnesses to this conflagration. After the army groups dispersed following their duty change parade in the evening , sound of a huge explosion had been heard from the direction of the small bullets storage warehouse . At about the same time the fire had broken out in that area. It was about 5.42 p.m. when this occurred.
Since the army evacuated simultaneously , the danger to lives was minimized. Thereafter the fire had spread towards the warehouse of the mega bullets.
Going by the bullets within the armory , as those could prove dangerous to people within a radius of 4 kilometers , all of them in that zone were evacuated.
Even during the last few hours ,explosions could be heard. This central armory storing bullets had been in existence for a long time , and during the war , the bullets were safeguarded there . Hence there is no issue with regard its security , it is learnt.
When Lanka e news delved deeper into this holocaust , it was discovered, according to the annual security report based on the investigations into the armory’s safety , nothing untoward about its security had been revealed in those reports.
Yet , as there are about 30 eye witnesses , it is not possible to conclude at once this is a sabotage, LeN inside information sources within the army stated. But it is the consensus of all by tomorrow the cause of the fire can be known with certainty .
Meanwhile , the investigation into this has been entrusted to the CID , according to Sagala Ratnayake , the minister in charge of law and order.
On 31 st May following a similar explosion of bullets in an armory located in the Western division of Maharashta province , India, 17 soldiers lost their lives in that holocaust.
Prior to this on 2 nd October 2014 in SL , an armory of an army camp caught fire in Mattegoda. The bullets and explosives in the Mattegoda warehouse of the engineering army camp complex were destroyed.
