P.M’s bid to rescue Bond Mahendran at the last minute soils his ‘Mr. Clean’ title ! No new appointment even today

(Lanka-e-News -30.June.2016, 10.45PM) The appointment of a new Central Bank Governor replacing the present Governor Arjun alias Bond Mahendran who is now drowning in a sea of corruption charges could not be made yesterday, because Prime Minister (P.M.) Ranil Wickremesinghe stood by him in a bid to rescue  his close corrupt friend , Bond Mahendran.

The president Maithripala Sirisena at a meeting at Girandurukotte last morning said , the present governor will be retiring , and a new Central Bank  governor will be appointed. An individual with experience and skill will be appointed in a few hours , said acting Finance minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena too last noon at the media briefing held to reveal cabinet  decisions .

A special meeting was held at the Central bank precincts last noon with the participation of the president and the Prime Minister , together with the officers . However the P.M. arriving for the meeting with the present  governor , the ‘accused’ sent a rude shock among all those present at the meeting.

If Bond Mahendran who knows his term is ending today (30) and who has already incurred the bitter  displeasure and resentment of the whole country , had any sense of shame , he should not have taken part in yesterday’s meeting, or at least could have made a public announcement that he does not wish to continue any further in his post.

Instead of that , the P.M. after arriving in the company of his friend the notorious corrupt Governor said, without any demur or shame  , the report of the Auditor General  pertaining to the controversial bond issue has been forwarded to the Parliamentary select Committee (COPE committee) dealing with general business  , and therefore until a decision is made by it , Mahendran continuing in his post is no issue.

Thereafter , the president halted the announcement of the new Governor of Central bank whose name he was to propose. It is to be noted prior to this meeting , the president and the P.M. had held discussions  and had  come to an agreement. In the end , the appointment of the new Central Bank governor that was to take place yesterday was postponed.

No matter what, Ranil Wickremesinghe ,yesterday only demonstrated to the world by his dogmatic propensities that he is still  seeking to protect and promote Bond Mahendran , the accused .

It has become very evident to the people , through this recalcitrant conduct of Ranil Wickremesinghe that to him  his corrupt bosom friend , a single individual is more important than the government of good governance serving an entire nation. At the last elections too Wickremesinghe P.M. by trying to rescue a friend deprived his party of 4 -5 seats . Not enough the damage done , it is most regrettable , Ranil this time by seeking to rescue a bosom pal has placed in jeopardy his ‘Mr. Clean’ title and soiled  the name of good governance of the present government he represents. It is a pity , it seems he will ultimately  reconcile himself to the  decision to dismiss Mahendran only after he had done all the damage needed towards  self destruction.

I think Ranil's stance is correct. Governor is acquitted by supreme court and there is no legal case against him at the moment. COPE is yet to come out with their verdict . How that got delayed so long with an opposition member as COPE chairman ( who has already crucify governor by labeling him as guilty) is another interesting turn of event . To oust Governor from him position based on hearsay by politicians and some journalists will be biggest injustice can come under Yahapalana principled government. So PM's stance is right . If he too is giving in easily to pressures exerted by media bosses and politicians with vested interest like president then this country will very soon ruled by Media bosses and corrupted politicians the way they want, If there is no proof against the governor for wrong doing then he is innocence.
