Supporting Maithri as common candidate: JVP trapped between desire and fear

(Lanka-e-News- 23.Nov.2014, 7.50PM) JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake who said , that his party will not join with the common alliance that is being launched in the next few days by the opposition in support of the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena, however revealed yesterday they will from outside campaign in favor of the abolition of the executive Presidency. The JVP leader disclosed this ‘desire cum fear’ stance when answering a question posed to him in yesterday’s ‘satana’ program.

Dissanayake explained that abolition of the executive Presidency and the establishment of good governance are programs that go beyond the Presidential elections, and his party’s view is, launching a common alliance in that direction is a must , adding that they are starting that campaign for abolition of executive Presidency tomorrow itself. Rallies are to be held across the entire country in this connection , and it is their request to the people to cast their votes to the candidate whom they wish with a view to abolishing the executive Presidency, Anura noted.

It was clear from his speech that although he had the desire to abolish the executive Presidency , he was also weighed down by the fear to directly join with an alliance to accomplish that.

Isn't it more advisable to offer wholehearted support at this crucial juncture instead of reserving parts of it.A collective effort is essential and important at the moment..Otherwise ordinary masses might be somewhat suspicious about the JVP aloofness though they verbally pledge full support to the common candidate.
