(Lanka-e-News- 01.July.2016, 10.35PM) Deputy minister of culture , Palitha Thevaraperuma who demonstrated his opposition yesterday (30) because 10 children were not admitted to grade one of Meegahathenne primary school, tried to commit suicide before the small children , parents and the principal as though to teach the suicide culture to the children.
The minister sought to kill himself by hanging - tying his neck to the fan in the room of the Principal when the latter had surrendered to the suicide threat of the cultural minister. Afterwards the minister had supposedly fainted and was admitted to the hospital.
Some media blew this incident out of proportion , though this is something that should be frowned upon and rejected. Today , Thevaraperuma is not of the opposition but of the ruling party , and he should have conducted himself as such. Indeed , Thevaraperuma should have been admitted to a mental hospital and not an ordinary hospital since attempting suicide is a grave mental disorder , and should be given long term treatment under medical supervision.
Besides, under the criminal procedure code of Sri Lanka this is a serious offence. Under section 302 of the criminal procedure code , if any individual tries to commit suicide or does anything towards that crime , he is liable to one year’s imprisonment and a fine . There is nothing mentioned therein that if he is the Cultural minister he should be given pardon.
The most grave criminal aspect here is , despite being a responsible deputy Cultural minister , he had acted this disgracefully . SL is a country which has a high percentage of suicide cases. Hence , as a Cultural minister he has set a most pernicious example to small children, the youths, and even the foolish adults and the elderly . This is most dangerous and deadly .
It is worth writing a few words about the ‘ far sighted’ leader who gave ministerial portfolios to such crazed mentally deranged patients.
Buddhika Pathirana secured two fold more votes than Thevareperuma in their district. Though Thevaraperuma tried to stab the leader with a knife , Buddhika never did anything like that to the leader. Besides Pathirane is a medical student, whereas Palitha is a thug. Therefore can granting a deputy ministerial portfolio to Thevaraperuma instead of Buddhika be considered as far sightedness of the leader whomsoever he may be ?
What’s more ? It was the ministry of culture that was granted to Thevaraperuma of all portfolios. Now , this eccentric deputy minister is going to schools and trying to commit suicide . Isn’t this a huge insult he is inflicting on the cultured citizens of the country?
If Thevareperuma who tried to commit suicide is a mental patient he must be placed in a lunatic asylum. If not he must be sent to jail in accordance with the criminal procedure code. If both these are not possible, he must be stripped off the cultural ministry portfolio immediately.
More importantly , the leaders must prior to good governance rule the country . If that too is impossible, at least the leader should be able to rule his own party .
