(Lanka-e-News -15.Nov.2016, 11.55PM) A bill shall be tabled in the northern provincial council to make learning Sinhala for Tamil students , and Tamil for Sinhalese students compulsory , said the Chief minister of the North, C.V. Wigneswaran.
Wigneswaran made this announcement when he attended a presentation ceremony at Nallur Hindu College on the 14 th.
Since Sinhala and Tamil are official languages , the Sinhalese government servants shall be taught Tamil , and Tamil Governments servants shall be taught Sinhala compulsorily in the North and East , and laws shall be introduced to give effect to this through the provincial council , the chief minister observed.
The chief minister pointed out , knowledge of both Sinhala and Tamil languages will conduce to reconciliation , and to acquire high positions when seeking employment and this will make easy within the country.
Students in Sri Lanka are abandoning the languages used within the country , and many are evincing interest in the learning of foreign languages like French , Russian etc. Because of the lack of knowledge of the languages in use within the country , there are misgivings and doubts between Sinhalese and Tamils , he pinpointed.
