(Lanka-e-News -24.March.2017, 11.30PM) President Maithripala Sirisena who is on a two day official tour of Russia met with Russian president Vladmir Putin on the 23 rd afternoon , and as a token of remembrance of the occasion , Putin presented Sri Lankan president with a very special gift.
Putin gifted a nineteenth century Royal sword of the Kandyan era to president Maithripala . This was a sword taken to England somewhere in 1906 , and was purchased by Russia subsequently at the Sotheby auction of artifacts in England.
This is the first time a Sri Lankan president secured an opportunity to make an official tour of Russia after 1974. SL president was taken to the Kremlin city led by a grand pageant . Following the cordial discussions between the two presidents , the bilateral talks began .
Putin who expressed great delight over the 60 years long ties between the two countries said , the economic, trade and political relationships between the two countries shall be further strengthened. Moreover everything possible will be done to provide assistance to SL, he added.
Four memorandums of understanding (MOUs) towards augmenting the bilateral ties between the two countries were signed before the two leaders. Cooperation between the two countries to develop the fisheries sector ; Cultural affairs ;providing Technical assistance; and promoting tourism were the four MOUs signed.
Ministers Mangala Samaraweera , S.B. Nawinna, Mahinda Samarasinghe, Susil Premajayantha,John Amaratunge, Dayasiri Jayasekera , and deputy minister Arundika Fernando were members of president’s delegation .
