(Lanka-e-News- 30.Dec.2014, 5.00PM) The Rajapakse regime that has outrageously robbed all the resources and assets of the country had not spared even the national anthem , opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe bemoaned when he addressed a Presidential election rally at Matale.
Enlisting the assistance of an American publicity company , namely , Leo Bernutt Co. , and jointly with it , the Sri Lanka (SL) national anthem had been surreptitiously amended as follows :
The original lyrics in the anthem are : ‘Oba ve apa shakthi’ ( you are our strength ) , ‘oba apa Aalokke’ ( you are our light) and ‘Apage anuprane’ ( our life) . In the new manufactured version, in place of the word ‘oba’ which in its original pristine purity refers to the motherland, has been distorted to impliedly mean ‘Mahinda Rajapakse’ thereby degrading the national anthem and its lofty values, in order to use it in Mahinda Rajapakse’s advertisements.
Under the constitution , such adulteration of the national anthem or distortion of its meaning is an offence , and anti constitutional. It is most sad to note , Rajapakses who are characterized by the overriding trait of robbing every asset and resource of the country , has become enslaved by this trait so much so that it is unable to refrain from robbing even the national anthem, Ranil regretted.
