(Lanka-e-News- 19.Feb.2015, 11.30PM) Seyid Radh Al Hussain , the UN human rights commissioner (UNHRC) has sent a letter to the Human rights council (HRC) chairman notifying his consent to postpone the report of the UNHRC on human rights in regard to Sri Lanka(SL) which was scheduled to be presented at the March session. Accordingly the report is to be presented in September as recommended.
SL’s foreign minister when touring countries including US and UK, recently , took measures to postpone this report until September , and advocated the view that the new government will conduct an international investigation with international assistance . This bears testimony to the success of the minister at foreign diplomatic levels . Indeed the deputy minister for foreign affairs , Ajith P. Perera saluted this success as a victory for the whole of SL.
The SL government is of the stance that a credible internal investigation into the human rights violations shall be conducted. Previously , the earlier government stubbornly stuck to the stance that no internal or international investigation shall be carried out. However it is our belief in a Democratic country when there are allegations , it is unethical and immoral if an investigation is not conducted. Moreover it does not speak well for the country.
The resolution adopted by the provincial council of the north that the report should be taken up in March itself by the council was forwarded by its chief minister to the UN Organization. However the UNHRC had not taken it into consideration.
Meanwhile Amnesty International had stated , the postponement of this report does not mean it is providing room to those who are facing charges to flee away . This delay is to further augment the report ; and towards conducting a fair investigation, both SL government and the UN organization shall contribute together, Amnesty declared. .
