Muslim representatives reduced by half in the proposed 20 th amendment- Four main Muslim organizations point out

(Lanka-e-news- 30.May.2015, 11.30PM) Four Muslim civil organizations have warned that if the 20 th amendment (the draft of which was presented to the cabinet recently) is implemented the number of MPs representing the Muslim community in the country will be reduced by half.

The Muslim organizations   say they are absolutely in support of this amendment which aims at rectifying the corrupt elections system that prevailed during the last two decades , but they are against the hasty amendment which  can seriously    affect the parliamentary  representation of the minorities adversely. The All Ceylon Muslim youth association Front, National Soora Council ,Sri Lanka Muslim council, and Muslim civil society organization of  Kandy circle have issued this communiqué signed by them jointly.

The Organizations point out that under the new electoral system , the Sinhala community should get their due representation , but the minorities including the Tamils, Muslims , Malays and Burghers must also be duly represented.

These organizations have advanced a number of proposals in order to continue with the Muslim representation under the 20 th amendment ,which the Muslim community is now having in parliament .Among them is the proposal to create 9 majority electorates .They also insist that the committee that is demarcating the electorates must compulsorily comprise Muslim and Tamil representatives.

Under the  circumstances ,where the Malay and Burgher communities are unable to have their own representatives , at least one representative of theirs shall be included- this  is  a specially noteworthy feature in the  communiqué . 

Meanwhile the JHU party of Champika Ranawake the notorious infamously famous extremist  appointed by the president to the constitutional council , had abused Muslim Congress party leader Rauff Hakeem in most insolent language , ‘Hakeem the villain’ and ‘Hakeem the satan’ in a communiqué issued yesterday evening. The communiqué further says, Hakeem by opposing the electoral reforms has turned into a satan , and the JHU will  campaign against it.
