(Lanka-e-News- 20.July.2015, 3.40PM) A most ugly unsightly incident took place for the first time in the cricketing history of Sri Lanka (SL) .This was not as a result of the involvement of the players but because of the spectators which left an indelible scar on the image of the country as a whole.
During the third one day cricket encounter between touring Pakistan team and Sri Lanka last night(19) played at Premadasa stadium , following the defeat of the SL team , two groups of spectators clashed unleashing violence and creating mayhem necessitating the match to be halted .This is the first time such an ugly incident occurred in SL’s cricketing history tarnishing the country’s image.
Though the Maligawatte police ,and the police STF of the environs managed to bring the situation under control , it is learnt that the racists spawned by defeated Rajapakses who were thrown out lock, stock and barrel on 8 th January were trying to exploit the situation to give it a mischievous communal twist.
It cannot be forgotten that it is only our cricket team that had been able to earn an international reputation for our country , and the world cup ,the highest achievement of SL in cricket was won on Pakistan soil.It is hoped that this ugly disgraceful episode will be the first and the last in SL’s cricket arena.
