(Lanka-e-News -21.Aug.2015, 10.00PM) Ranil Wickremesinghe who created a record in Sri Lanka’s history of elections by polling over five hundred thousand votes at the recent presidential elections took oaths this morning (21) at 10.07 at the presidential secretariat before president Maithripala Sirisena. It is Ranil Wickremesinghe who is also the only prime minister who has held this post on four occasions in Sri Lanka ‘s parliamentary history. He took oaths today as P.M. for the fourth time.
The memorandum of understanding to form a government of consensus between the SLFP and the UNF was also signed at about the same time at the same venue .UNP secretary Kabir Hashim and SLFP new secretary Duminda Dissanayake signed the memorandum. Strikingly , all these took place in a simple ceremony.
Mahinda Rajapakse the deposed president and Kurunegala district M.P. attending this ceremony was something shocking .It was also most specially noteworthy that next to Mahinda Rajapakse was seated Hema Premadasa the wife of a former president , and next to her was seated ex army commander Sarath Fonseka who was jailed by Mahinda Rajapakse, and now appointed as field marshal.
Sangha members, the members of the clergy , and a large number of parliamentarians , local and foreign envoys were also present on the occasion.
Ranil Wickremesinghe became prime minister (P.M.) for the first time on 07 th May 1993 before president D.B. Wijetunge , and took oaths today as P.M. for the fourth time after 22 years. Prior to becoming the P.M. in 1993 he held posts of cabinet minister of Industries, science and technology ; education ;and youth affairs. In December 2001 he was appointed as P.M. for the second time. Again on 9th January 2015 , he was sworn in as the P.M. for the third time.,
D.S. Senanayake, Dudley Senanayake, Wijayananda Dahanayake, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, J.R. Jayawardena, R. Premadasa , D. B. Wijetunge, Chandrika Kumaratunge, Mahinda Rajapakse, Rathnasiri Wickremenayake and D.M. Jayaratne were prime ministers hitherto in SL’s parliament history.
