Maiden session of 8 th parliament begins – Karu Jayasuriya is the speaker

(Lanka-e-News- 01.Sep.2015, 10.00AM) The maiden session of the 8 th parliament began today , and Karu Jayasuriya was appointed as the speaker.Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe proposed his name , and was seconded by the former opposition leader Nimal Siripala De Silva. Thereafter both of them escorted the speaker to his official seat.

Jayasuriya thanked the members for selecting him as the speaker . In the photograph is Karu Jyasuriya expressing his gratitude prior to taking his  seat.

However the attention of all is now most  focused on who is going to be the opposition leader ?

The JVP has strongly objected that when the UPFA is joining with the UNF and going to run a government , a part of it sitting in the opposition and seeking to secure the post of opposition leader is not in order .The JVP opposed this and threatened to take to the streets.

After the amalgamation of the two main parties , the next party is the TNL that has secured the most number of seats in parliament  , and therefore it is the TNL democratically speaking should hold the post of opposition leader , democratic parliamentarians believe.

In any event , the SLFP acting  Gen. secretary Duminda Dissanayake told the State media that the opposition leader post should  also be held by the UPFA.

Question :
Isn’t the SLFP asking for the ruling power as well as  the opposition power unfair ? Besides isn’t it  unethical ?
Duminda :
No. The party that has the largest M.P representation only becomes the opposition. Hence , we should get that opportunity.

Q.
But the SLFP is representing the government too?
Duminda:
Yes. Yet shouldn’t we safeguard our identity ?

Q.
Then , the amalgamation and opposition are to go on together ?.
Duminda :
If wrongs are committed, we shall be speaking against them .

Meanwhile , the president held a discussion with the Alliance party leaders yesterday regarding the opposition leader post . At the discussion the president said , he would not interfere in this , and the opposition leader issue shall be resolved within the parliament.

Significantly , for this alliance party leaders meeting ,  Udaya Gammanpila , representing the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya which is not a registered party was not invited by the president. Though he was omitted , the other party leaders made it a point to be present at the discussion. All the parties of the UPFA contested as one party under the Betel symbol.

The only communist party M.P. Chandrasiri Gajaweera who won contesting  under the alliance had already announced he will remain as an independent .
